Annie Lane Bridal goes viral for wheelchair-friendly storefront

ZEALAND – Local business is getting viral attention for its storefront.

Annie Lane Bridal, 152 E. Main Ave. in Zeeland, has three wedding dresses modeled in the window. Two of the store’s mannequins are standing. The third uses a wheelchair.

“We’re well known in town for our storefronts,” said Annie Hamstra, owner of the company. “We change them often.

“We have a new employee, but a longtime friend, Lisa Boersema, who suggested that we put a wheelchair in the window. We all thought it was a great idea.

Another new employee, Katie Keegstra, decided to make a TikTok video of the process.

“TikTok is my way of loving my job more than I (already) do,” she said. “I love creating content that I’m proud of and it’s a fun way to show off the dresses.”

For Keegstra, the display looked like a personal victory.

“I have seen how difficult it can be for people in wheelchairs to be represented,” Keegstra said. “I grew up with my grandmother in a wheelchair because she had ALS.”

Within hours, video of Annie Lane’s new screen spread across the internet. As of Thursday, it had reached over 284,000 views.

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Keegstra said. “Seeing comments in so many different languages really puts the number of people affected into perspective.”

Keegstra, a junior from Zeeland East High School, started working at Annie Lane in early February. She is planning a summer photoshoot with models from all walks of life.

“I want little girls to be able to see someone who looks like them and know that they can be, too, when they grow up,” she says.

A new storefront at Annie Lane Bridal in downtown Zeeland has taken the business turn to TikTok.

Annie Lane Bridal opened in downtown Zeeland in 2019. The store is run by Hamstra and her daughter, daughter-in-law, niece and mother. In addition to wedding dresses, the store sells bridesmaid dresses, veils and sashes.

The shop opened a second location in downtown Allegan in late 2020, followed by a third location at Rivertown Crossings Mall in Grandville.

“We love being part of downtown Allegan,” Hamstra said.

“The Rivertown location has all of our mother’s dresses, bridesmaid dresses and ball gowns (gowns) – in addition to the wedding dresses. This has allowed us to expand the Zeeland and Allegan locations in stores entirely focused on the bride. “

All three stores carry dresses that range in price from $ 399 to $ 3,000 in sizes 0 to 30.
