SALEM, Va. (WV News) – Obituary-Salem-Donna Jean Ford Hayes, 77, of Valley St. Salem left this life on Thursday, September 30, 2021 at United Hospital Center, Bridgeport.
Born in West Union on June 13, 1944, daughter of the late Galen Dale and Edna “Maxine”; Dilly Ford.
She was married to William “Bill” Howard Hayes on West Virginia’s 100th birthday on June 20, 1963, which preceded her in death on February 1, 2018.
Survivor are two wonderful sons, William “Todd” Hayes and his wife Bridget Cooper Hayes, and Michael “Chad” Hayes, three beloved grandsons, Hunter Cooper Hayes, Holden Bennett Hayes and Heston Raleigh Hayes all of Salem.
She is also survived by her beloved brother, Alan Dale Ford and his wife Debra Morris Ford and the daughter and family of Alan, Farrah and Tony Johnson and their sons, Isaac and Alex all of Salem.
Donna graduated in 1962 from Salem High School and in 1966 from Salem College. She graduated with a master’s degree over 45 from WVU.
She was a librarian at Harrison County Schools and retired from Liberty High School as a librarian in 2010 with forty-four years of service.
She taught the Upward Bound program during the summers at Salem College and SIU for thirty years and also taught an adult computer evening class at Liberty High School for 10 years.
Donna has been Vice President of the Salem Apple Butter Festival and President of the SAB Festival Celebrity Auction since 1988. Donna and Bill were honored to represent Salem at the 2014 Salem Apple Butter Festival as Senior King and Queen.
She has sold Avon since January 13, 1984. After her retirement, she organized the Liberty Retirees
Lunch and Lunch for retired librarians who meet monthly.
She has been secretary of the Salem High School Alumni Reunion since 2013 and hosted the annual Valley Street Yard Sale in 1988 and is a member of the Salem Baptist Church. She is also a member of the Association of Retired Employees of WV Schools.
Donna enjoyed crafts and antique shopping in Berlin, OH, Amish Country with her family and friends.
She was devoted to her family and her pets and will be sadly missed.
The funeral service will be held at Harbert 287 W. Main St. Salem Funeral Home on Monday October 4, 2021 at 2:00 pm under the presidency of Pastor Jon Hayes.
Interment will follow in the C de P Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Monday after 11 a.m. until service time.
