A dedicated football fan covered his home in English jerseys ahead of the Euro team’s first match.
The three lions face the Croatian team at 2 p.m. today at Wembley Stadium, and in anticipation, New Marske’s Matthew Wills has adorned his windows with a vintage kit.
He hopes this original show will lift people’s spirits throughout the competition and make them smile after a difficult year.
“They will all stay until England is out of the competition,” he explained. “I have about fifteen more, so I’m going to trade and change them constantly.”
The 47-year-old, who lives with his dog, knew he wanted to decorate his home after it received a warm welcome at the last World Cup.
He said: “It’s nice for the village and it definitely gets people talking and creates a feeling of excitement.
“Lots of people stopped me to chat, and there are always people outside taking pictures.”
Matthew has been collecting shirts for about 25 years and says his favorite is an English goalkeeper yellow jersey because “it’s something a little different”.
“I also collect English cricket and rugby shirts over the years – I’m not a club team.”
Although Matthew certainly supports England through his domestic project, he doesn’t have too much confidence in himself.
“I don’t expect England to do too well. We always expect too much of them, and they tend to buckle under pressure at major competitions.
“Personally, I think Portugal will win the trophy.”
