New Orleans Library Youth Book Clubs Focus on Comics and Graphic Novels | Entertainment / Life

Children who love comics and graphic novels are invited to join the New Orleans Public Library’s monthly reading clubs.

Bubble Talk is a space where children aged 7 to 11 come together to talk about everything related to the graphic novel. The title for July is “Peter and Ernesto: A Tale of Two Sloths,” by Graham Annable.

It will meet at 1 p.m. on July 22 on Zoom.

Visit catalog.nolalibrary.org or download the NOLALibrary app to reserve a copy, which is available in print and e-book formats. Sign up for Bubble Talk at nolalibrary.org/events.

For lovers of older graphic novels, the library also hosts a monthly virtual manga book club for ages 11-17 at 4:30 p.m. on July 22.

The group will meet via Zoom on the fourth Thursday of the month, through November, to celebrate the manga series available at the library. Book club attendees are encouraged to come in cosplay or bring in artwork, and those who do will receive a prize.

The July series is “Naruto” and the August series is “My Hero Academia”. Manga Book Club is sponsored by the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library.

OPEN DOORS OF THE TECHNICAL CENTER: The Best Buy Teen Tech Center at the New Orleans Public Library will host a virtual open house at 5 p.m. on July 21 on Twitch. The center is a place where teens can develop critical skills through hands-on activities that explore their interests in programming, filmmaking, music production, and design.

Participants will meet the staff of the Teen Tech Center while participating in a game of “Among Us”, a game of deduction and mystery in space.

Visit nolalibrary.org for details and registration. Participants must complete a liability waiver before playing, and anyone 12 years of age or younger must be supervised by an adult.

A CHAPTER ON PAINTING: Learn how to paint simple animal portraits in a fun and relaxing environment during the library’s BYO Wine and Design virtual party at 6 p.m. on July 21. All skill levels are welcome. The class will begin with a painting tutorial from Creativebug, and an artist moderator will be on hand to provide advice.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of New Orleans Public Library and is limited to 15 participants, each of whom will receive a free acrylic painting kit that includes everything needed for two paintings. Visit nolalibrary.org/events to register.

TALE TIME: Meet up every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for a virtual story hour live on Zoom to read, sing, speak, write and play together in a format designed for children aged 2 to 5 and their caregivers. Register at nolalibrary.org/events

TEEN CRAFTS: Teens are also invited to a DIY workshop on the theme “Between us” during the July Take & Make Craft Zoom workshop in the library at 4 pm on July 27. To participate, teens can pick up a Take & Make Kit at any location in the library starting July 1. All materials and instructions are included in the kit, and workshop attendance is not required to receive one. This monthly program is sponsored by the Friends of New Orleans Public Library.
