If there’s one thing Olivia Rodrigo does well, it’s an impeccable benchmark. Whether it’s going back to the confessional lyrics and scuzzy guitars of its musical heroes like Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple; the nods to Jennifer’s body and Japanese horror Hearing in her “good 4 u” video directed by Petra Collins; or the tribute to Courtney Love’s Hole album in 1994 Live through it She paid for the promotional photos for the concert movie “Sour Prom” which she debuted this week, Rodrigo still hits the nail on the head.
And while celebrating the success of his “Sour Prom” on Wednesday, Rodrigo paid another perfect tribute to a pop culture moment of decades past, this time around, through his style. Posting a snap from his afterparty on the rooftop of a Los Angeles parking lot, Rodrigo not only posed with a bunch of star-studded friends (including musician Conan Gray and actor Iris Apatow) in an adorable riff in the classic photo. prom but also took a break from sketching in the ultimate ’90s party look: a pastel pink Betsey Johnson mini dress.
The lovely vintage piece from Johnson’s archives featured a subtle floral print and hot pink lace trims carefully offset by Rodrigo and his stylists, Chloé and Chenelle Delgadillo, with a pair of sparkling sky blue heels, offering a perfectly Y2K color contrast. And while the accessories were equally charming – particularly the floral bodice Rodrigo wore as a bracelet – it was the cheeky pair of pom-pom braids that looked like the perfect nod to Rodrigo’s beloved decade. In an interview with Vogue in May, she noted “I wish I could be a teenager in the 90s because it’s my all time favorite music.” Obviously, Olivia Rodrigo’s love story for the 90s is one of the two substances and style.
