Veterans Day 2021 celebrations at Hampton Roads

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – This year’s Veterans Day is Thursday, November 11 and the community of Hampton Roads honors military veterans with several celebrations and festivities in the area.


Wreath laying ceremony

  • Info: The Chesapeake Mayor’s Commission on Veterans Affairs will host a wreath laying ceremony on Veterans Day.
  • When: Thursday November 11 at 11 a.m.
  • Or: Chesapeake Veterans Memorial in front of City Hall, 306 Cedar Road.
  • More information: The public is invited to attend.


Veterans Day weekend festivities at Nauticus

  • Info: Nauticus in Norfolk invites all veterans and active duty members for a weekend of festivities
  • When: November 11-14, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday
  • Or: Nauticus and Battleship Wisconsin at One Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510
  • Cost: Discounted military tickets must be purchased at the admissions office. Adult tickets are $ 15.95, kids tickets are $ 11.50, members are free. Paid entry includes admission to the Nauticus Museum, special programming, and Battleship Wisconsin
  • More information: All veterans and active duty members will receive 50% off general admission tickets at the admissions office with proper identification.
  • Veterans weekend programming
    • Remembrance of prisoners of war / MIA: Friday, honor our missing servicemen and our prisoners of war in the historic officers’ quarters with 11 different objects that have special meaning for families and servicemen.
    • Quartermaster’s Conversations: On Friday, the battleship’s director of operations, Keith Nitka, will resume his role as quartermaster to discuss with guests his experience aboard Wisconsin.
    • Chat with BB64 veterans: Have you ever wanted to talk to a battleship sailor? Do you have questions about what it was like to sail on a Dreadnought and go to war? On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, former Wisconsin crew members will return to share their stories in the historic officer’s quarters.

Online Salute to Service Event

  • Info: A Virtual Celebration and Discussion on American Veterans
  • When: Wednesday 10 Nov, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Princess Anne County Training School / Union Kempsville High School Alumni and Friends Association (PACTS / UKHS) and Virginia Beach History Museums (VBHM) are hosting the event. It will feature musical video tributes from Symphony, guest speakers presenting new and important information about Veterans Benefits and Services, and an opportunity for Veterans to connect with the community at large. Featured speakers include:
    • Moderator: LTC James Belin, US Army (retired), PACTS / UKHS alumnus
    • CWO3 Danny Miller, US Navy (Ret.), Commanding Officer, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 20
    • Maj Daniel Boothe, US Air National Guard, Music Director and Conductor, Symphonicity

Tidewater Veterans Day Ceremony and Parade

  • Info: Join the Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations as they pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and protected our country, and fought for our freedom, in the Day Parade and Ceremony 2021 Tidewater Veterans. The parade will feature more than 90 units, including military units from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard who represent the facilities soldiers in the region. Veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom will participate, along with several municipal and veteran support organizations from Tidewater, including groups of local high school students and Boy Scout and Boy Scout troops.
  • When: Thursday November 11 at 9 a.m.
  • Or: The parade begins at 16th Street and Atlantic Avenue and ends at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial on 19th Street, across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 1000 19th Street.


Place flags on the graves of veterans

  • Info: Williamsburg officials are calling on local residents to help place flags at veterans’ graves in honor of Veterans Day.
  • When: Tuesday November 9 at 9 a.m.
  • Or: Cedar Grove Cemetery which is located at 809 Henry Street
  • Cost: To free
