Virtual kindergarten bootcamp, book clubs and more at the Northland Public Library

The Northland Public Library is located at 300 Cumberland Road in McCandless. Registration is required to attend free virtual and in-person programs, when indicated.

Virtual kindergarten training camp, August 9 to 13 – A little nervous about the big step? Join us on the Northland Children and Teen YouTube channel,, for a week-long bootcamp designed to give your preschool graduates more confidence! Each session will be posted at 10 a.m. and includes kindergarten prep activities as well as songs and stories that everyone should know before heading to kindergarten. Children will need scissors, pencils and a pencil for their home experience. Activity sheets can be downloaded from the website or picked up from the Child and Youth Services office.

Readings in Alternative Everything, 7 p.m. August 10 – The current title is “The Intuitive Way: The Definitive Guide to Raising Your Awareness” by Penney Peirce. Various mysteries of the mind and other ways of seeing the world are the subject of books for this group, which meets on the second Tuesday of each month. Northland Radio Hour: The Scrap of Lace, 7 p.m. on August 12 – Have some tea, sit next to your computer and join the library for a mystery radio! Will you be able to solve the mystery with Detective Rosika Storey? Find out when Northland staff unveil the “The Scrap of Lace” murder mystery. Registration is required for this virtual program. A Zoom link will be emailed during the week of the program.

After hours boarding game, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., August 13 – Catch your favorite gaming friends and join us on the second Friday of every month. A selection of board games will be available for you to try out or bring your favorite to share with others. Please use the upper level entrance. Refreshments will be served. No registration required.

Lost in Pittsburgh: The Forgotten History of Pittsburgh Jazz, 7:00 p.m. August 18 – Tom Roberts of the Hot Club of Pittsburgh presents Pittsburgh’s premier jazz musicians through recordings, images and research. This period of history has suffered incredible neglect and this program helps restore the legacy of many Pittsburgh musicians who have slipped through the cracks of time. Registration is required for this virtual program. Please register as a household. A Zoom link will be emailed during the week of the program.
